About Studytutor

What is Studytutor?

An AI revision tutor for pupils in England and Wales, from Year 7 to Year 11. You can ask it about a question you're stuck on, revise a topic with a short marked quiz, or try timed exam practice. It explains step by step, gives hints, and asks you questions back.

Is the tutor a person?

No. It's an AI (Claude, made by Anthropic), a computer program. It can get things wrong, so check anything important with your teacher. Every chat starts by saying so.

Which subjects does it cover?

GCSE: Biology, Chemistry, Physics (combined and separate science), Computer Science, English Language, English Literature, French, Geography, History, Mathematics, Religious Studies and Spanish.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9): Computing, English, French, Geography, History, Mathematics, Religious Education, Science and Spanish.

Will it do my homework for me?

It's built to help you learn, not to do the work for you: it gives hints and asks questions rather than handing over finished answers. Never hand in anything it writes as your own work. Its marks are practice, not predicted grades.

How much does it cost?

While Studytutor is in beta, it's free. If that changes, we'll say so well before, and nobody is charged unless they choose to pay.

Who runs Studytutor?

Polylabs Research. Michael runs it for the company. You can reach us at contact@studytutor.co.uk.

Joining and signing in

How do I join?

Join the waiting list on the front page. We approve everyone one at a time, so it can take a while. Young people aged 13 or over can join themselves. A child under 13 is added by a parent or carer who already has a Studytutor account, from their Family page.

How do I sign in?

With your Google account, or with an 8-digit code we email to your approved address. A code works once, in the same browser, for 10 minutes.

The code didn't arrive.

Check your junk or spam folder, and mark the email as not junk. Codes run out after 10 minutes, so ask for a new one if it's late. We send up to 10 codes to one address in a day: after that, the sign-in page says when you can ask again, and signing in with Google still works. If a code still doesn't come, email us.

I'm on a shared computer.

Tick This is a shared device when you sign in: you'll be signed out after 12 hours. Sign out yourself when you've finished, from Your account.

It says my account isn't ready.

We may still be checking something, or a parent or carer may need to say yes first (for under-13s). The screen tells you which. If it's been more than a few days, email us.

Using the tutor

What can I send it?

Type a question or your working, or send a photo of your written work. Only send photos of your work, never of yourself or anyone else. Before a photo leaves your device, your browser saves a fresh copy of it, which removes location data.

Can it draw diagrams?

Yes. It can draw graphs, diagrams and interactive helpers, which open beside the chat (or under Diagrams on a phone).

What are quizzes and exam practice?

Revise a topic gives you questions one at a time and marks each answer. Exam practice is a timed paper in the style of the real exam: about 15, 30 or 60 minutes. Your marks build up your progress page.

It says that's the limit for today.

Everyone has a daily limit, so Studytutor stays affordable and fair. It resets at midnight, UK time. There's also a limit of 30 new chats a day; you can carry on in a chat you've already started.

A reply was wrong, odd or upsetting.

Press Report under that reply and say what was wrong. Michael will look at that reply and your message before it, and you can see his answer under Your reports in Help. If it upset you, talk to an adult you trust too.

Can I delete a chat?

Yes. Open the list of chats from the title at the top, and use the bin next to the chat. It's deleted for good.

Privacy

Who can see my chats?

Only you. No parent or carer ever sees your chats, or what time you chat. Michael doesn't read chats; he'd only look at a stored chat for a safety concern, a problem you report, or if you ask him to, and every look is recorded. See our privacy notice.

What can a parent or carer see?

Only if they're linked to you in Studytutor: your marks, the topics you've practised, and how much you used it each day (as a word, like "a little" or "a lot"). If you're 13 or over, that happens only if you choose to share, and you can stop at any time. If you're under 13, the parent or carer who said yes sees it until you turn 13.

Where does my information go?

Your chats and photos are kept in London on Google's cloud. Your messages go to Anthropic, which makes the AI, so it can reply. Sign-in codes are sent through Scaleway's email service. Nothing is sold, and there are no adverts. The privacy notice has the details, with versions for young people and under-13s.

Does Studytutor use what I practise?

To make the explanations better, we keep a record of which skills students practise, how it goes, and what help came first, without names, with the day but not the time, and never anything you wrote. We only look at totals across many students. You can untick Helping Studytutor improve in Your account, and we delete what was kept. We never sell any of it.

How do I get a copy of my data, or delete my account?

Email contact@studytutor.co.uk from your sign-in address.

Getting help

Something isn't working.

Once you've signed in, open Your account and press Help. The helper there can answer most questions, and Report a problem sends it straight to us. You'll see our answer in the same place.

I'm worried or upset about something.

The tutor can't get help for you, and nobody reads chats as they happen. Talk to an adult you trust, or call Childline on 0800 1111 (free, any time). In an emergency, call 999. Our staying safe page has more.
