For students
Studytutor is an AI tutor for revising, from Year 7 to Year 11. Here's how to get the most from it, and what happens to your chats.
What you can do
- Ask the tutor: type the question you're stuck on, or send a photo of your working. It explains step by step and gives hints.
- Revise a topic: it asks you questions one at a time and marks each answer.
- Exam practice: a timed paper in the style of the real exam, about 15, 30 or 60 minutes, marked at the end.
- Diagrams: ask it to draw a graph or a diagram, and it opens beside the chat.
- Progress: your marks build up, topic by topic, so you can see what to practise next.
Getting the best from it
- Put your exam board and tier in your notes for the tutor, in Your account (for example "AQA, Higher maths").
- Show your working, even if you think it's wrong. The tutor can only help with what it can see.
- Ask for a hint rather than the answer. You'll remember it better.
- After a quiz, ask it to go through the question you found hardest.
It's an AI
The tutor is Claude, made by Anthropic: a computer program, not a person. It can get things wrong, so check anything important with your teacher. Don't hand in anything it writes as your own work.
If a reply is wrong, odd or upsetting, press Report under it. Michael looks at every report, and you can see his answer in Help.
Your chats are yours
- Nobody else sees your chats, or what time you chat: not parents, not other users.
- If you're 13 or over, nobody sees your marks unless you choose to share them with a parent or carer. You can stop sharing at any time, in Your account.
- Michael doesn't read chats. He'd only look at a stored chat if he was worried about your safety, if you reported a problem, or if you asked him to.
- Only send photos of your work, never of yourself or anyone else.
The privacy notice for young people has the details.
If you're under 13
A parent or carer adds you and says yes before you can start. They can see your marks, which topics you've practised and how much you've used Studytutor each day. Not your chats, and not what time you chat. When you turn 13, they stop seeing your progress unless you choose to share it. The page for under-13s explains it all.
If something's wrong
- Something isn't working: open Your account and press Help.
- Something's not right about your account (the name isn't yours, or the adult who can see your marks isn't your parent or carer): use Something's not right? in Your account.
- You're worried or upset: the tutor can't get help for you, and nobody reads chats as they happen. Talk to an adult you trust, or call Childline on 0800 1111. It's free, any time. In an emergency, call 999. See staying safe.
