For parents and carers
Studytutor is an AI revision tutor for pupils in England and Wales, from Year 7 to Year 11. This page explains how it works for your family. What we keep, and why, is in our privacy page for parents.
What your child gets
- A tutor that explains, step by step. Your child can ask about a question they're stuck on, send a photo of their working, revise a topic with a short marked quiz, or sit timed exam practice.
- Help to learn, not answers to copy. The tutor gives hints and asks questions back. Its marks are practice, not predicted grades.
- An AI, and it says so. The tutor is Claude, made by Anthropic. It can get things wrong; every chat starts by saying so, and children are told to check important things with their teacher.
- GCSE and Key Stage 3 subjects: sciences, maths, English, computing, geography, history, religious studies, French and Spanish.
How your child joins
13 or over
They can join the waiting list themselves, or you can add them from your Family page once you have an account. Either way, Michael checks every new account first. If you added them, they're asked when they first sign in whether to share their progress with you, with two equal buttons. It's their choice, and they can change it later.
Under 13
- You add your child from your Family page: their first name and the email address they'll sign in with.
- Michael checks with you before anything happens, then approves. We email you how it works; we never email your child.
- Your child signs in, tells us their birth month and year, and types your email address.
- You get an email, sign in with your own account, check their details and say yes. The tutor starts then.
If nobody says yes within 30 days, we delete what your child told us.
Your Family page
When you sign in, you land on your Family page. For each child linked to you it shows:
- their marks and the topics they've practised, with how each topic is going;
- their marked quizzes and papers by date;
- how much they used Studytutor each day, as a word (a little, some, a lot, up to the day's limit).
You can stop seeing a teenager's progress at any time, and they can stop sharing it. For a child under 13 you supervise, you can stop supervising: their tutoring stops at once, they're told, and their account closes 30 days later unless supervision restarts.
You can use the tutor yourself too: Open the tutor on your Family page.
What you won't see, and why
Never their chats, or what time they chat. Children ask more freely when their questions are their own, and the ICO's Children's Code asks services like ours to respect a child's growing privacy. Your child is told exactly what you can see, and a sign on their screen says so.
If we were ever worried about a child's safety, we'd share what's needed with whoever can best help. That may not be you: for example, if the worry is about home.
Keeping it safe
- The tutor stays on schoolwork, and is told how to respond if a child seems upset: kindly, without promising secrecy, and pointing them to a trusted adult, Childline or 999.
- There's a daily limit, and no streaks, badges or reminders designed to keep children coming back.
- No adverts, and nothing about your child is sold.
- Any reply your child thinks is wrong or upsetting can be reported with one button, and Michael looks at every report.
Our staying safe page lists where to get help, including the NSPCC's helpline for adults.
Cost
While Studytutor is in beta, it's free. If that changes, we'll tell you well before, and nobody is charged unless they choose to pay.
Questions or problems
